Boys & Girls Haven is a Louisville nonprofit serving youth and families through residential care, independent living support, counseling, and other programs. We work to create safe, supportive environments for young people and the staff who serve them.

We’re seeking a mission-focused Director of Human Resources to lead the organization’s HR practices and partner with the CEO and leadership team. This role oversees employee relations, recruitment, leave and accommodations, benefits, workers’ compensation, compliance, and HR systems. The Director also supervises the Administrative Services Coordinator and helps build a workplace where staff feel seen, safe, and supported.

What You’ll Do

  • Advise leadership on employee relations, corrective action, performance documentation, and consistent policy application.

  • Conduct and oversee workplace investigations, document findings, and partner with the CEO on recommendations.

  • Manage leave and accommodation processes, including FMLA, ADA, medical leave, and personal leave.

  • Lead recruitment from job posting through hiring, pre-employment requirements, and new-hire orientation.

  • Own the organization’s HR processes in Paycom, including personally entering new hires and improving workflows through automation, testing, and implementation.

  • Manage workers’ compensation claims and coordinate with carriers, providers, and supervisors on return-to-work planning.

  • Administer employee benefits, lead open enrollment, and oversee 401(k) plan administration.

  • Maintain the employee handbook and ensure HR policies and practices meet applicable legal requirements.

  • Coach supervisors and partner with the Director of Staff Development on training needs.

  • Track and report HR measures, including turnover, open positions, and workers’ compensation trends.

What We’re Looking For

  • At least five years of progressive HR experience, including at least two years in a senior HR role.

  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; Master's preferred. PHR, SPHR, or SHRM-CP certification preferred.

  • Hands-on experience with employee relations, investigations, corrective action, recruitment, leave administration, workers’ compensation, and supervisor coaching.

  • Experience administering an HRIS and improving processes through workflow design or automation; Paycom experience preferred.

  • Working knowledge of employment requirements involving areas such as EEOC, ADA, and FMLA.

  • Strong judgment, communication, organization, and documentation skills, including the ability to handle confidential matters appropriately.

  • Nonprofit, human services, or residential care experience is preferred. Experience with trauma-informed or trauma-resilient practices is an asset.

  • Valid driver’s license; at least 21 years of age; legally authorized to work in the United States; and able to complete required pre-employment screenings.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be needed.

Why This Role Matters

Strong, consistent HR practices help staff do their best work and support the safety and well-being of the youth and families we serve. The Director of Human Resources has a key role in building that foundation across Boys & Girls Haven.
