Core Schedule:

Monday – Friday  9-2 or 10-3  with flexibility based on programing and weather; also weekend care rotations with volunteers

Hourly Rate:  $16hr.

Role Summary: Provides basic care for the animals in the equine program, consisting of but not limited to horses, chickens, and pigs etc. Assist Equine Program Manager with overall care of the physical facility. Also, be willing and able to assist in equine groups or individual learning with clients we serve.

Essential Functions:

  • Assisting with barn, arena, stall, pen, fence, gate, and pasture maintenance, as directed by Equine Barn Manager
    • Pasture maintenance consistent of weed eating, seeding or manure spreading etc….
  • Maintaining cleanliness of aisles, arena, and pasture spaces.
  • Assisting with tracking/ and organizing hay, grain, supplements, medications, supplies and sawdust as needed.
  • Daily care of the horses, including feeding, mucking stalls, cleaning buckets, turnout, blanketing (if needed), etc
  • Walk fencing and pasture area to ensure post/ boards are stable and identifying any concerns in pasture.
  • Cleaning all animal pens and area’s ensuring safety and the best animal care is provided as outlined my Equine Manager
  • Communicate observations of horse’s/animals behavior and health to Equine Manager.
  • Assist in misc. barn related chores. (i.e. dusting, removing cobwebs, watering arena, etc).
  • Maintain and organize grain, hay, and supplement storage areas
  • Attend meetings and special events as needed.
  • Complete daily check sheet for each shift.
  • Provide additional supervision/ equine learning when needed for clients and animals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Education – High School diploma or equivalent
  2. Experience/Credentials – Must have two years experience with caring for horses and being responsible for barn maintenance. Familiar with Natural Horsemanship a plus, as well as experience working with foster youth and youth with high risk behaviors
  3. Other - Interact professionally with BGH employees, clients, visitors, government agencies and the general public.  Maintain confidentiality of all client information.  Must be at least 21 years of age and legally able to work in U.S.  Valid driver’s license and insurability by BGH’s insurance carrier required.  Successful completion of all background screenings and pre-employment drug screen.  Successful negative, post-contingent offer and annual TB screenings. 

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to: stand, walk and sit; use hands to manually manipulate, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to read, write and converse in English.

Work Environment:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to clients’ apartments, communal areas and a standard office environment.  Clients’ living spaces may range from impeccably clean to less than appealing regarding order and cleanliness.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  The employee will come into contact with BGH clients, staff members, Board members, volunteers and other members of the community.
